You are added to a WhatsApp group called "Stock Market Tips India" or "SEBI Certified Advisor โ€” Free Tips." The group has thousands of members. Every day, someone posts stock recommendations with screenshots showing massive gains. One day, you are invited to a "VIP group" where the real tips are shared โ€” for a fee.

This is one of the fastest-growing scams in India. According to SEBI, Indians lost over โ‚น1,750 crore to investment scams in 2025 alone. The scam has evolved โ€” it now uses Telegram, YouTube, and even fake trading apps alongside WhatsApp.

No one can legally guarantee returns on stock investments.

Any person offering "guaranteed" profits from stocks, options, or mutual funds is either lying or operating illegally. SEBI-registered advisors are prohibited from guaranteeing returns.

How the WhatsApp Stock Tip Scam Works

  1. 1 You are added to a large WhatsApp or Telegram group without your consent. The group appears to have thousands of members โ€” most are fake accounts controlled by the scammer. The admin presents themselves as a SEBI-registered research analyst or stock market expert.
  2. 2 Free tips are given regularly โ€” and some actually make money. This is deliberate. The scammer recommends widely enough that some tips work by chance. Fake "members" post screenshots of huge profits, creating social proof. You start to trust the group.
  3. 3 You are invited to a "VIP" or "premium" group where the "real" high-return tips are shared โ€” for โ‚น999 to โ‚น50,000. Once you pay, the tips in the premium group lead to losses, not gains. The scammer disappears after collecting fees from enough people.
  4. 4 Some victims are pushed further into opening accounts on a fake trading app. The app shows fake portfolio gains to build confidence. When you try to withdraw, you are told to pay "taxes", "processing fees", or "compliance deposits" first. The money you deposit is gone.
  5. 5 If you try to withdraw, the excuses multiply. "Your account is under audit." "You need to pay 18% GST to release funds." "SEBI has blocked withdrawals temporarily." Every excuse is designed to get more money out of you before you realize it is a scam.

โš ๏ธ The fake trading app is the most dangerous variant โ€” victims have lost โ‚น10 lakh to โ‚น1 crore believing their portfolio was growing, only to find they can never withdraw.

7 Red Flags of a Stock Tip Scam

๐Ÿšฉ Guaranteed returns or "no risk". This phrase alone is illegal under SEBI regulations. No legitimate investment advisor can promise you a specific return. If someone guarantees profit, they are either lying or breaking the law.
๐Ÿšฉ Added to a WhatsApp/Telegram group without your consent. SEBI-registered advisors do not recruit clients through unsolicited group adds. You should approach them โ€” not the other way around.
๐Ÿšฉ Pressure to move to a "VIP" paid group. The free group exists only to build trust. Once trust is established, you are funnelled into a paid service. Legitimate research analysts publish their recommendations formally โ€” not in WhatsApp chats.
๐Ÿšฉ A trading app you downloaded via a link or WhatsApp. Real brokers (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Angel One) are listed on the Play Store and App Store. Any trading app shared via a link in a chat is fake.
๐Ÿšฉ Fees to withdraw your own money. Legitimate brokers never charge you a percentage of your portfolio to process a withdrawal. "Tax deposits", "compliance fees", or "SEBI clearance charges" before withdrawal are fabricated reasons to steal more money.
๐Ÿšฉ SEBI registration number that cannot be verified. Every legitimate advisor has a verifiable SEBI registration. If someone claims to be SEBI-registered, verify it yourself at sebi.gov.in โ€” do not take their word for it.
๐Ÿšฉ Screenshots of profits as proof. Screenshots are trivially easy to fake. Real performance track records are audited documents โ€” not WhatsApp screenshots. Anyone sharing profit screenshots as proof of their skills is manipulating you.

How to Verify a Real SEBI-Registered Advisor

Before investing with any advisor or firm, verify them in 2 minutes:

  1. Go to sebi.gov.in โ†’ Intermediaries/Market Infrastructure Institutions โ†’ Registered Intermediaries
  2. Search for the advisor's name or registration number
  3. Confirm the registration is active and the category matches (Research Analyst, Investment Adviser, etc.)
  4. Contact them only through details listed on SEBI's website โ€” not numbers given in chats

๐Ÿ’ก SEBI's SCORES portal (scores.sebi.gov.in) lets you file complaints against fake advisors. Reporting helps protect others from the same scam.

What to Do If You Already Paid or Invested

  1. 1 Stop all further payments immediately. Every new fee request โ€” "tax", "compliance", "processing" โ€” is designed to extract more money. Do not pay anything more regardless of what they threaten.
  2. 2 File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. Provide all details โ€” the WhatsApp number, payment UPI IDs, app name, and all transaction records. Cyber police have recovered money in investment fraud cases when reported quickly.
  3. 3 File a complaint with SEBI at scores.sebi.gov.in if the scammer claimed SEBI registration. SEBI investigates and can take action against fraudulent operators.
  4. 4 File a local police complaint. Bring all evidence โ€” screenshots of messages, payment receipts, the app name, UPI transaction IDs. This creates an official record and helps in recovery proceedings.
  5. 5 Warn others. Report the WhatsApp group to WhatsApp (Settings โ†’ Report). Share your experience in public forums so others are not trapped. Investment scams grow through silence.
